System of onboard diagnostics (OBD) - a principle of functioning and codes of malfunctions

Use of a digital measuring instrument preferably for the several reasons. In order to avoid failure of the electronic module of management (ECM/PCM) before to disconnect from it electroconducting without fail switch off ignition and disconnect a negative wire from the battery.

If the stereosystem established on the car is equipped by a security code before to disconnect the battery make sure that have a correct combination for audiosystem input in action!

System of onboard self-diagnostics of first generation OBD-I

The general information

It is not necessary to be mistaken, assuming, the system consisting of set of various information gauges and operated the electronic processor hardly gives in to diagnostics. All refusals and infringements of functioning of components of system are fixed in electronic memory of the module of management in the form of special digital codes. Reading of codes can be made by connection to diagnostic socket DLC of the special scanner or the digital voltmeter (the first subsection of the present Section see).

The driver is notified on any infringements of functioning of components of systems of injection/decrease of toxicity of the fulfilled gases by means of operation built in in a combination of devices of a control lamp of refusals / ”Check up the engine”. If failure had a temporality and the management module registers system return to normal functioning, the control lamp is disconnected. Remember that codes register refusals of electric contours in aggregate, instead of separate components entering into their structure. So, presence at memory of the module of management of a code № 14 says about malfunction in a chain of the gauge of position throttle заслонки (TPS), that at all unessentially testifies to failure actually the gauge. At revealing of causes of a failure it is necessary to give especially steadfast attention to a condition of corresponding electroconducting and quality of its contact connections. Codes of set of various malfunctions can simultaneously be stored in memory of the processor of system of onboard diagnostics (PCM). Delivery of codes at reading is made in ascending order their identification numbers and does not depend in any way on an order of their entering in memory.

Before to start reading of diagnostic codes, make sure, that pressure developed by the battery corresponds to standard requirements (the engine Electric equipment see the Head).

Remember that at switching-off of electroconducting from the battery or the controller of a control system automatic clearing of memory OBD occurs the engine!

Before input reader connection to diagnostic socket DLC and switching-off it do not forget to turn the ignition key in position OFF. Performance of the given operations at the included ignition can lead to input in memory of the processor of false diagnostic codes (the control lamp of refusals / ”will simultaneously work also Check up the engine”.

Reading of codes of malfunctions by means of the scanner

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

The description of procedure of reading of codes from memory ECM by means of the scanner of type Mitsubishi MUT-II is more low resulted. At use of devices of manufacture of other manufacturers strictly adhere to applied instructions!

1. Connect the scanner to located at the left under the panel of devices to diagnostic socket DLC (in case of need preliminary remove an access cover).

Clearing of memory of the processor

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

At clearing of memory of the processor with input reader application сканерного type follow instructions of manufacturers of the device.

1. Switch off ignition.
2. Disconnect a negative wire from the battery.

If the stereosystem established on the car is equipped by a security code before to disconnect the battery make sure that have a correct combination for audiosystem input in action! After not less than 1 minutes restore battery connection.

3. Include ignition.
4. Having executed reading procedure, make sure of presence at memory OBD of a code of normal functioning of system.

System of onboard self-diagnostics of second generation OBD-II

The general information

The onboard processor (PCM) is responsible for serviceability of functioning of components of systems of decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases, fans of system of cooling, can carry out updatings of a corner of an advancing of ignition and management in working parametres of automatic transmission. Submission to one module of management of power supply systems and ignitions allows to carry out thin adjustments of structure of an air-fuel mix under any conditions of operation of the engine. The general principles of functioning PCM are described in the second subsection of the present Section.

Besides functions of management PCM carries out also constant monitoring of a condition of components of control systems by the engine/decrease of toxicity of the fulfilled gases that does by its central knot of system of onboard self-diagnostics. Codes of electric refusals of various contours of corresponding subsystems and elements register in memory of the processor.

It is necessary to notice, that the system of onboard diagnostics of the second generation is not capable to register the infringements having the mechanical or hydrodynamic nature, however a similar sort refusals can be registered опосредственно at the expense of the influence rendered on functioning of electric knots. So, OBD purely physically it is not capable to reveal such defect as partial infringement of passableness of an injector, nevertheless, the result of the given infringement will be invariably fixed upon pauperisation of an air-fuel mix, indirect registered by the oxygen gauge. Being based on the analysis signals arriving from gauge O2, the module of management of system will carry out record in memory of the processor of a code of a corresponding diagnostic code.

Distinctive feature of systems of self-diagnostics of the second generation (OBD-II) is the organisation in them of the adaptive logic, allowing to make dynamic management of functioning of system of injection of fuel. The given feature allows to compensate automatically deterioration and fluctuations of parametres of components of the power supply system. So, at stably working engine the management module traces the tendency to pauperisation or enrichment of an air-fuel mix and undertakes corresponding steps on updating of its structure, aspiring constantly to maintain стехиометрическое number 14.7:1. Correcting parametres are brought in special memory of the processor, fixed in it and remain accessible at the subsequent cycles of operation of the car (a memory food is carried out directly from the battery and does not depend on position of the lock of ignition).

Reading of codes of malfunctions by means of the scanner

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1 Scanner is connected to located at the left under the panel of devices to a diagnostic socket (DLC).

2. The first step of diagnostics of system always is interrogation of memory of the module of management. At the given stage the general nature of refusals is defined, and consecutive reading of codes allows to elicit the fact of their removal from memory.

3. For reading of codes can be used both the firm scanner of the company-manufacturer of the car, and scanners of foreign manufacturers, - strictly adhere to instructions of manufacturers of the device.


Reading of codes of malfunctions by means of the voltmeter

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Find at the left under the panel of devices diagnostic socket DLC.
2. On models since 1996 вып. Switching possibility between arbitration and federal formats of reading of codes is provided. Usually on the models equipped with system of onboard self-diagnostics of the second generation (OBD-II) possibility of reading of codes by throws of pressure ("flashes") on plugs of socket DLC it is not provided also scanner application is an obligatory condition, however, on models Mitsubishi the given possibility is realised.
3. In view of global standardization of codes OBD-II their decoding appreciably becomes simpler. At reading of codes by means of the voltmeter (on pressure throws on plugs DLC) first two positions of a designation are not used. Whereas the car transmission gets to number of components трансмиссионной lines, codes of its refusals also begin with d's letter as coincidence between numbers of codes Mitsubishi and SAE is absent, the figure of a code following a letter also has no value.

4. Codes can be считаны on throws of an arrow of the voltmeter connected to socket DLC. Each code is highlighted by a series from three groups of "flashes". So, to code Р0753 there corresponds group of ”seven flashes” which groups of five and three "flashes" directly follow. Высвечивание the next code begins through a short pause. Duration of all "flashes" is identical, the exception makes only a zero designated by a throw of pressure большей of duration; so code Р0702 (short circuit in chain TPS) will look as follows: seven normal "flashes", one long, then two more normal.

5. Reading of codes is made as follows:

Make sure of serviceability of a condition of electroconducting and its contact connections;
Prepare a paper and a pencil for conducting records;
Find diagnostic socket DLC at the left under the panel of devices of the car;
Start the engine and make on the car a short trip for system transition in a self-diagnostics mode;
Park the car, having left the engine working on single turns;
Connect the voltmeter (analogue or digital) to plugs of diagnostic socket DLC, - a positive wire to the plug 1, negative to the plug 4;
Watching throws arrows/jumps of indications, consider written down in memory of the processor codes of malfunctions (see more low). Write down results; sometimes probably also reading of codes by flashes of a control lamp “Check up the engine” after short circuit of the plug of 1 socket on the case.
Make necessary corrections, clear memory of the processor and, having repeated check, make sure of absence in memory of codes.


Clearing of memory of the processor

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Clearing of memory of the processor after elimination of malfunctions should is made without fail.
2. For clearing scanner GST or a special tester is used.
3. For clearing of memory ЕСМ connect to system the scanner and in an apportion its menu choose function “CLEARING COEDS” (“Removal of codes”). Further follow the instructions highlighted on the device. Alternatively clearing of memory of system can be made by battery switching-off.

If the stereosystem established on the car is equipped by a security code before to disconnect the battery make sure that have a correct combination for audiosystem input in action!

Battery switching-off also leads to removal of options of the receiver on favourite radio stations.

In order to avoid damage ЕСМ its switching-off and connection should be made only at the switched off ignition!
